William Mackinnon, Phoenix
Opening October 22, 2019 - 18:00
William Mackinnon's paintings sit at the intersection between reality and imagination, what he physically perceives and what he concocts in his mind. He explores the possibilities of painting through what is often a fantastical representation of the environment around him: whether it be a roadscape, landscape, or dreamscape. Through his practice, William seeks to convey what it's like to live in the modern world.
For his first solo exhibition in a European collection, Mackinnon draws on formative experiences living in remote indigenous communities in central Australia and the Kimberley; his paintings are deeply personal, shifting and changing based on his own life experiences.
Born in Melbourne in 1978, William Mackinnon currently lives and works in Ibiza. Mackinnon completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2000, a Postgraduate Diploma at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, in 2006 and a Master of Visual Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, in 2008. He has held solo exhibitions for over two decades in Australia and overseas.
Art Projects Ibiza + Lune Rouge are delighted to present their summer exhibition with Tracey Emin; "An Insane Desire for You" exhibits explicit yet subtle and mysterious nuances regarding the female body, power, and desire. Emin's works make as powerful a statement in contemporary society today as they did back when she started addressing and unveiling these topics.
In this conversation with Jeremy Strick (Director, Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas), the artist discloses what is behind this show, how her life made her grew wiser to these days and how meaningful art is to her.
